Honor Yourself: Put It Into Practice

May 25, 2021

Are you tired of giving your energy to people, places, and things that drain you?

Let’s talk about learning to honor ourselves. Like, being a discerner of energy and refining our focus to the things that bring us joy and enhance our personal growth. There are so many times, I feel tried lol. And sometimes I choose peace and other times I choose violence. *evil laughs* But both times I choose myself. I honor myself by choosing my comfortability over the comfortability I can provide to others. And when feelings of guilt and overwhelmingness creep in from me saying no, or speaking up for myself, or ending a relationship. I weigh my options by considering 1)whether my actions can cause harm to others or myself and 2) whether my actions go against my personal growth. If not, I’ve learned to say f*ck it and continue pressing on. Though at times I’ve fallen short, I'm also learning to move with a purpose because honoring yourself takes courage and hella patience.

One practice that has helped me learn to honor myself is defining my core values. When making a decision, I try to use my values as a guide to inform me on where I should place my energy. Our value system is our belief system which essentially plays a key role in how we fundamentally honor ourselves.

The exercise I am sharing today is frequently used at professional development conferences and team retreats with the intention for participants to identify their values and how it impacts the way they navigate the workplace, relationships and the world around them.

This exercise is called the “Live Your Core Values Exercise”. It can be done in 4 simple steps and can take up to 15 mins to complete. Remember, your core values are deeply personal and should reflect your individuality. Please refer to the graphics to 3-5 to complete the exercise.

I hope this brings you closer to honoring yourself.
