This week's look is inspired by a streetwear aesthetic. I styled an oversized trench coat by pairing it with a tank top, a pair of sequins pants + a pair of Jordan “Ones”. Both the Ones and the NY Yankees fitted cap are signature pieces in NYC culture-- which inspired me to share how NYC has influenced my love for style.
If we are talking about style, NYC’s swagger is on a hundred, thousand, million. The city’s swagger is influenced by its diverse culture, amazing food, and beautiful architecture. Across the five boroughs, resides 8.4 million people + twenty of the nation's most diverse counties.
Here in NYC, our differences may set us apart but they make us unique and for that reason alone I grew up appreciating people from different cultures. On any given day, I could easily submerge myself into a different way of life. A 15-minute train ride is what separates historic districts like Little Italy from Chinatown.
Being exposed to different cultures as a child, allowed me to expand my definition of style. Whereas, I learned to appreciate style concepts from other cultures; especially traditional garments like kimonos, geles, and kilts.
As I got older, my fascination manifested into experimenting + fusing my style with cultural concepts, colors, and textures. I began finding different ways to layer my clothes +implement vibrant and patterned textiles. Most importantly, I saw the importance of making my style my own.
NYC has undoubtedly shaped my style. The city’s diverse culture empowered me to show up as my unique self. And though NYC is the fashion capital of the world, the style that roams the streets are often not trendy but unique to the individual.
The Big Apple. A city full of inspiration that has taught me that style is limitless.
